Food and Sauces Gallery

The category of food or culinary bottles excludes fruit and canning jars represented in another gallery. Bottles made for foods are pretty numerous and constitute a large portion of bottles produced. Historically, many processes were used to preserve food for the long term, including drying, smoking, pickling, sugaring, salting, alcohol (i.e., “brandied cherries), cold storage (when available), and a few other methods less often. Although the variety of different shaped glass containers used for food products was quite extensive, many food bottles and jars share a couple of traits in common. In particular, bottles and jars intended for bulky solid food items like preserved pickles, olives, fruits, etc., had to have a relatively wide mouth (bore) to facilitate the packing and extraction of these products.
